380,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 MW of power

If the non polluting, cost effective and more efficient options of producing energy are employed, the oil business will go down. Those companies which provide funds for political parties and help them win elections will suffer. The coal industry, the oil industry, the steel industry, which employ millions of workers will be knocked out and in turn the government will be blamed for loss of jobs due to lack of subsidies.

This fear in the minds of the governing keeps wind powered engines, solar cell and concept cars from being commercialized. Even though the idea of renewable sources of energy is propagated, governments still rely on the what-so-ever left fossil fuels to keep the likes of Shell and ONGC running in order to operate the governments and in turn the economy.

Around 93 million miles from where you are sitting and reading this, a massive ball of plasma-tic nature of physical anatomy burns 600 million tonnes of hydrogen to give 595 million tonnes of helium every second. This makes our Sun lose 5 million tonnes of its mass to churn more energy each second than ever used in human history which gives 380,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 MW of power.

This energy received on the Earth amounts to a colossal 38lacks and 50thousand ExaJoules in a year, or 440*10^21 Joules per hour. What is consumed by all the humans, for food, exploration, manufacturing & production, entertainment, R&D, marketing, computations etc amounts to an average of 5.7*10^19 Joules per year.

This means that even if we can capture 1/8000th part of energy that the Sun showers at us in an hour, we can actually power the entire Earth for one year.

We can get more energy in an hour than is being consumed per year.

We have the technology -

  • for active capture: Parabolic dishes and Stirling Engine system, Photovoltaics, Simple thermal collectors
  • for passive capture: solar alignment of buildings, use of favorable thermal mass materials and light dispersing character of glass and building substances, designing spaces to naturally circulate air

Then why not use it? For residential purposes, solar power inverters are available at costs as low as can be covered within 18 months of installation. saving on electricity, and of-course cascading the benefit to the bank balance which can be invested for better living.
